I guess it really speaks to Tumblr’s US-centricity that I haven’t seen a single post about the Mark Duggan verdict. You know, the young, unarmed black man who was shot and killed by police and whose death sparked off the riots in 2011 that raged through London and beyond all summer. His killing was just ruled ‘lawful’. The metropolitan police just got away with murder. Again.

Nearly 1,500 people have died in police custody since 1990 and not a single officer has been convicted as a result. It doesn’t seem like very many, but most police officers don’t carry guns and shootings are very rare. Many of the deaths are people just being brutalised in custody, and then they report it as self-harm or some other bullshit. I read a statistic today that said people in London were eight times more likely to be killed by a police officer than by a terrorist, and yet we’re supposed to feel safer when we see armed coppers in underground stations.

After the riots in my area calmed down and things went back to normal, I got into a lot of arguments with people who weren’t from London or even a big city about what caused them. I maintained that it was the police’s fault, and that it was resentment towards the Met that’s been building for years and years and boiled over when they made it very obvious (again) that they don’t really give a shit about the people of London, especially not the most vulnerable. My dad was in the Met police. I was raised to trust them. But every single contact I’ve ever had with them has shown me that’s not a good idea. These days it feels like they’re just government-sanctioned thugs with no accountability.

Predictably, the UK’s media are tripping over each other to talk about Mark Duggan’s supposed connections to local gangs, or how he was supposed to have thrown a gun 20 yards over a fence seconds before he was shot and killed even though there’s no evidence to suggest it was anything but a plant.

I don’t have the energy to write much more about it because it’s really, really upsetting. I’m just incredibly sad that his name’s being added to the long, long list of young black men who’ve been killed by police and will never get justice.

We have a new candidate for asshole of the year.

And how precious is it that this man decided that he gets to define something which overwhelmingly affects women more than men? It’s just adorable. As Bilmon said, "Leaving aside vicious sexism & rape denialism, it is amusing when RW white (& white collar) elites try to pander to their blue collar marks."

just when I thought I couldn’t hate Fox any more than I already did

Shitty things that have happened today

Plane canceled, brother robbed at gunpoint, emergency money stolen [see previous shitty thing].
