It's All An Adventure

Joss Whedon’s whole career is riding on The Avengers being successful

Marvel is putting all their chips on the table for this one: they’ve been setting up this movie for years, sometimes at the expense of their other films (for example, all the scenes on Iron Man 2 which were preparation for The Avengers). It’s their big tent-pole movie this summer, and their hope to prove that comic-book adaptations didn’t fizzle out in the 2000’s. If this movie is a financial success, they’ll go all-out, with further movies from these characters and additional movies with more obscure/less popular characters (Ant-Man? Doctor Strange?). Joss will be hailed as the hero who pulled together an ensemble cast and proved that comic books can be entertaining, thought-provoking, and most importantly, profitable. He could basically direct any Marvel character of his choosing, and would have no problems financing and producing a few small side-projects like a Dr. Horrible film or Firefly season.

But if the movie fails, if it’s more a Green Lantern or even Daredevil level of film, Joss will be the man who killed the Marvel movie franchise. He’ll be untouchable, anathema to all but his most ardent supporters. He may even need to go crawling back to Fox, since they feed off his misery. I’m not saying this is likely, or even probable; just that Joss’s future is riding on this film. He certainly is aware of this; I just hope the factors beyond his control work in his favor. This is Joss’s chance to once again prove to the rest of the world (as in not Whedon fans) what happens when you give him creative control.

#Is it weird I'm having a panic attack on his behalf? #I'm sure the movie will do great but that 'if' is just looming there
